About Optimism
What is Optimism?
Optimism is a layer 2 (L2) scaling solution that uses Optimistic rollups technology to bundle large amounts of transaction data into batches, making it cheaper than Ethereum. It functions on top of the Ethereum mainnet, and transactions occur on Optimism while the transaction data gets posted to the mainnet for validation. Optimistic rollups work by bundling the data about hundreds of transactions into a single transaction on the Ethereum mainnet, reducing the blockchain transaction fee required to pay. Optimistic rollups assume transactions are valid until proven false, and there's a time window during which potentially invalid transactions can be challenged by submitting a "fraud proof" and running the transaction's computations with reference to available state data. Optimism reimburses the gas needed to run the computation of the fraud proof. As a result, Optimism and other layer 2 scaling solutions, such as Arbitrum, are becoming increasingly popular for their cost-effectiveness and security benefits. Optimism provides a promising solution to the scalability challenges facing Ethereum, enabling more efficient and cost-effective transactions while maintaining the security of the mainnet.
Does Optimism have a token?
Optimism is governed by its same-name native token, Optimism (OP), launched on May 31st, 2022. 214 million OP tokens were given for free to 231,000 eligible addresses in an airdrop, which represents 5% of the total 4.29 billion supply. The OP token provides participation rights in The Optimism Collective, composed of Token House and Citizens' House, a two-tier governance system. Token House governs technical decisions related to Optimism, while Citizens' House will govern public-goods funding decisions. During its early days, Optimism raised funds on Gitcoin, a significant public-goods funding platform. The majority of the OP token supply has yet to enter the mark. It is anticipated that the governance structure and allocation of funds will evolve as the Citizens' House becomes operational. OP token allows holders to influence and make decisions regarding the development of Optimism, which is essential to the platform's success.
How to get Optimism airdrop?
A portion of the OP token supply was airdropped to early Optimism users, although the launch was turbulent. The criteria for awarding tokens included the use of an OP bridge before June 23, 2021, or repeated use of Optimism projects between June 23, 2021, and March 25, 2022. Active participation in decentralized governance, control over large pools of capital and key protocol functions on Optimism, a donation to Optimism on the public goods platform, and being priced out of Ethereum were also factors considered for receiving tokens. The developers behind Optimism have stated their intention to continue airdropping tokens in the future.
Is Optimism on mainnet?
Yes, Optimism mainnet is now online. Its EVM-compatible mainnet was launched in 2021. Before that, Optimism released its initial testnet in 2019, followed by the first EVM-compatible testnet in 2020.
